Forex Broker Licences in 2026: Offshore vs Regulated

The licence is usually the biggest cost in a new brokerage and the decision that shapes everything else: banks, payment providers, marketing and who you can accept as a client. Here is how the main options compare.

Licensing

A broker licence is permission from a financial regulator to offer trading services, take client money and, in many cases, act as counterparty to client trades. Which one you need depends on where your company is, where your clients live, and how you execute trades. This is not legal advice: use it to prepare for the conversation with a lawyer, not to replace it.

UK (FCA)$200,000 to $400,000+GBP 75,000 to 750,00012 to 18 months
Australia (ASIC)$250,000 to $500,000+AUD 1 million+ net tangible assets12 to 24 months

Figures are typical ranges published by Soft-FX (October 2026) and other licensing guides, including professional fees. Capital figures vary by licence class and between sources, and regulators change fees: Mauritius raised several annual fees from 1 July 2026. Confirm current numbers with the regulator or your counsel.

Two notes on the cheapest options. St Vincent and the Grenadines no longer licenses forex brokers, so older guides that recommend it are out of date. Very cheap licences, such as Anjouan, are often quoted at $15,000 to $25,000 for the first year, but they come with weak banking access and growing scrutiny, which can make payments harder rather than easier.

Capital is not a cost. Regulatory capital is money you must hold and keep, not spend. Budget it separately from legal fees, the platform and marketing.

Most first-time founders start offshore because the numbers work. That is a legitimate choice if you serve markets that allow it and you run the business properly. What does not work is marketing to clients in countries where you are not allowed to operate. That is how offshore brokers get regulator warnings, frozen payment accounts and blocked domains.

How to choose

  1. List the countries your clients will come from. That decides which licences are even possible.
  2. Decide your execution model, because acting as counterparty can change which licence class you need. See A-book vs B-book.
  3. Talk to two or three licensing firms and one independent lawyer, and compare the full cost: application, professional fees, local office or staff, audit and annual fees.
  4. Check with payment providers early whether they accept clients under that licence.
  5. Budget for the timeline. You will pay for a company, an office or local director and advisers while you wait.

Where the platform fits

Regulators and payment providers will ask how you onboard clients, verify identity, approve deposits and handle withdrawals. On FirmForge, KYC review, deposit approval, the withdrawal queue, staff roles and an activity record live in the back office on every plan, which gives you a documented process to point to.

FirmForge is a software provider, not a broker or a regulated entity. It does not hold a licence on your behalf, does not hold client funds, and does not give legal or regulatory advice. Your licence, your compliance and your client terms are yours. Because there is no setup fee and plans are monthly, you can prepare the platform while the licence is in progress without a large upfront spend.

Frequently asked questions

How much does a forex broker licence cost?

Offshore licences in places like Seychelles, Vanuatu or Mauritius typically cost $25,000 to $75,000 to obtain in 2026, plus capital you must hold. Tier one licences such as CySEC, the FCA or ASIC typically cost $150,000 to $500,000 or more, with much higher capital requirements.

What is the cheapest forex broker licence?

The cheapest options, such as Anjouan, are often quoted at $15,000 to $25,000 for the first year, but they come with weak banking access and growing scrutiny. Many founders find a slightly more expensive offshore licence pays for itself in easier payments.

Can I run a forex brokerage without a licence?

Taking client deposits for leveraged trading without authorisation is illegal in most countries and makes banking and payments very difficult. Get legal advice on the right licence or exemption for your structure before you accept clients.

How long does it take to get a broker licence?

Offshore licences typically take three to eight months. Tier one licences such as CySEC, the FCA or ASIC typically take nine months to two years.

Does FirmForge provide a broker licence?

No. FirmForge is software only. Licensing, compliance and client terms stay with the operator, as they do with other white label vendors.
